Nature Photography Meetup

Saturday 12 October
Staten Island Ferry Terminal - 3:30pm - 2 Hours
Zach NeSmith
Join this session for tips on how to use your camera settings to creatively capture nature in a visually interesting way. We will be looking at composition, focus, and colour.

Many professional offices and places of business have large prints gracing their wall space of things such as fields of flowers, a butterfly perched on a leaf, and a single dew drop on a rose petal. These beautiful images are all around us in nature. It just takes that special "eye" to not only see it but to capture it in a way that will turn that simple little piece of nature into a beautiful piece of art. We will learn how to use different angles, light and shadows, and settings to make subjects pop.

Jason did an excellent job of slowing down the process of HOW to shoot street photography in Manhattan. He watched the way we shot and gave useful feedback to us accordingly. He also took the the time with set ups, camera settings and how to shoot and move in a crowd. I'd be happy to go out with him again. He made it fun!

My life has been unconventional, needed some time off after High School so I left NJ and went to work for the Forest Service in NH, from there Ski bumming in VT, a summer in the Virgin Islands, another working with the Native Americans in SD and then fishing in Alaska. Time to get back to college so got a A.S. in Bus. from LSC in VT and then a BFA in Photo from RIT. A reluctant move to the Big Apple, for I was a country kid and now I have become a hipster in the heart of Brooklyn. In the interim, marriage, a kid, a few cats, a dog, divorce and a few landlord lawsuits. Doing the photography thing the whole time with the typical up and down success and droughts, have worked with celebrities, corporations, some magazine covers, been on TV met good people, evil people. Work in progress, why don't you become a part of it!

Devil?s Bathtub. When I arrived fog was lifting off the water and there was a lone fisherman. Beautiful. The reeds in front of me prevented me from the shot I originally wanted, closer to the water and boat, so my bigger lense went to work. ISO200. f5. 145mm. 1/1000

On this dewy, fresh morning something compelled me to grab my camera and take a picture as sandhill cranes strolling gracefully through the front yard. Harriet pictured here is, as always, accompanied by Ozzie and their offspring of the season. They have been welcomed morning coffee mates for the last 12 years. The picture captures the calm presence and the dancer's restlessness of these beautiful visitors.

The Great Reno Balloon Race was this weekend. About a dozen balloon are up and aglow before dawn. This beautiful one was my favorite. Most shooting were using auto white balance, cloudy, or 5600K to keep the yellow cast from the flame. I prefer a white balance which retains the true colors of the balloons, especially for this balloon.
